Working toward tolerance December 7, 2007

In response to several bias incidents on campus, the University formed the President’s Committee on Tolerance to establish unity among all students despite their diverse backgrounds.

Don Brown, director of Multicultural Affairs and Community Service, and Dean of Students Anthony Campbell head the committee and work with students, staff and faculty to promote understanding and tolerance. Those involved are divided into subcommittees designed to organize programs to educate the Rider community about different cultures and also ensure community values are recognized.

The Rider wrestling team continued to compete against the country’s elite as the Broncs took part in the 26th annual Cliff Keen Vegas Invite.

Rider competed alongside 13 of the top 25 ranked teams in the nation.

“It was tough,” said Head Coach Gary Taylor. “Many of the top wrestlers in the nation were there.”
Junior Doug Umbehauer performed well at the tournament placing fourth in the 184-pound weight class. He ended the tournament with a 5-2 record.

Rider athletics has had its shining moments during this 2007 fall semester.

Senior Tyler Brewington, who placed no lower than third place individually in any event, dominated for a golf team that didn’t play as well as they were expected to this season.

Brewington had two first-place finishes and two runner-up performances during the fall campaign.

The women’s basketball team fell to Towson, 74-68, in its first home loss of the season before starting conference play for the year.

Rider (3-4 overall) jumped to an early lead, 15-7, in the first five minutes of play, with seven points by sophomore Tammy Meyers.

Identical twins have triple the amount of what regular siblings share: the same face, the same sex and the same genes.

Juniors Erin and Lauren Mahar are one such pair of twins, but they also share a love for soccer that has driven them to achieve a successful college experience.

“The best they could do was pick up their pieces.” Rider may not be the Italian restaurant and we may not be the couple of Billy Joel’s lyric. But, as Joel recounts the good and bad of the summer of 1975 for Brenda and Eddie, it would be wise for us to do the same after a year that sometimes seemed to fit Daniel Powter’s Had a Bad Day. But for Rider, it would be bad days.

The men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams set two Rider records this past weekend while the men came in sixth of seven teams and the women took eighth of eleven at the “Big Al” Invitational.

Junior Priscilla Modrov set Rider records in the 100 and 200 fly as sophomore Kellyanne Tomasule set a record in the 100 back.

May 1, 2008 is going to be an incredible, spectacular day for two reasons. Firstly, it’s the day that I turn 22. (All gifts can be dropped off at my residence hall room.) But it’s also the day I present my Baccalaureate Honors Program (BHP) thesis, which means I will have successfully completed the BHP.
