For the past decade, Dean Joseph Nadeau’s workdays have focused on behind-the-scenes efforts that students only see as final results.

“I’m in charge of about 25 departments and programs,” noted Nadeau, dean of the College of Liberal Arts, Education and Sciences (CLAES).

Now, after 10 years as dean and as a professor in the Geological, Environmental and Marine Sciences (GEMS) department, Nadeau will retire. The spring semester will be his last.

Similar to college freshman, Dr. Adriano Duque (pronounced “doo-KAY”) is beginning his first year here at Rider.

Between meeting new colleagues and getting involved with extracurricular activities, Duque knows this all too well.

Duque is experiencing his first year of being a part of the Rider staff in the department of Foreign Languages and Literatures department. Although he was born in Italy, he lived in Spain for sometime.

For the second time in two weeks the Rider community been shaken by bigotry. After a racial slur was written on multiple doors in a residence hall last week, demeaning comments marked the Facebook.com “wall” of a Latin American Student Organization (LASO) member on Tuesday.

Just say no. Those are all too familiar words. These three simple monosyllabic words were drilled into our heads over and over again in the drug education we received. When you think about it, the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) we had in elementary and middle schools did not really address the facts of substance abuse. Counterproductively, it evoked the motto parents would often have for saying no to us. How many times have we all been told “no” by mom or dad and gotten the unsatisfying response of, “Because I said so?”

Because of recent past events, the University has undergone many major changes to enforce the new alcohol policy on campus. One of these that I believe is still raising eyebrows is the admission of minors into the Pub on designated nights.

Adopted in 2001, the Statement of Community Values was read at the Unity Vigil held on Wednesday, Oct. 18 where students, faculty and administrators came together to reinforce the principles of this credo most notably the one illustrated in the photo above.By Jetty Hartsky

Imagine walking out of your residence hall room, and noticing a racial slur on your whiteboard or in the hallway. Perhaps this has happened to some of you. At the very least, you may even know someone affected. In fact, I am sure many of you have seen at least something unexpected written on yours or someone else’s board throughout your college life. Whiteboards serve as a fun way for you to communicate with your neighbors, but all too often, they are used as tools to receive strange anonymous messages.

While in Washington, D.C. for his internship with CNN and studying with the Institute on Political Journalism at Georgetown University, senior Nicholas Ballasy got a chance to meet President Bush at the Conference on the Americas.By Nicholas Ballasy

Securing an internship can be a difficult task, especially if college students around the country are vying for the position. When I was asked to write about my summer internship in Washington, D.C., I decided I would tell a little bit about the kind of work I did leading up to my time in Washington, where I successfully nabbed an internship at CNN, some of my experiences there, and provide a few tips on how to secure a solid internship.

Stomping to victory over two more Northeast Conference (NEC) teams has helped Rider’s field hockey team clinch its eighth straight play-off berth as well as the No. 2 seed going into the postseason.

Rider (10-8, 6-1 NEC) overtook Monmouth (4-10, 3-3 NEC) 3-2 in overtime before beating Sacred Heart 3-1.
