Abraham Lincoln was
elected to the presidency. Two days after, Lincoln finally wrote to his running
mate, Vice President Hannibal Hamlin, suggesting they should meet. The two
never spoke prior to the election.
November 7, 1867:
Poland
Science was thought to
be a man’s world, but on this day, Madame Marie Curie was born. Curie won
two Nobel Prizes in her lifetime. One was in physics, which she shared with
Pierre Curie, her husband, and Henri Becquerel. The other prize was awarded to
her for isolating pure radium.
November 9, 1938:
Germany
Nazi troops and rousers
trampled through the streets of many German cities. They looted and destroyed
Jewish-owned buildings. Shattering glass reverberated throughout the
night—Krystalnacht.
