“The Star Spangled Banner,” written by Frances Scott Key in 1814, was used as the country’s anthem shortly after it was published. Congress, however, officially made it the United States’ official hymn on this day—over a century later.

March 4, 1789:

Philadelphia, P.

Though July 4 marks the anniversary of America’s independence, this date is also another important milestone. The U.S. Constitution was offically enacted and became the supreme law of the land.
