‘Saw II’ tears up the screen
Saw II, sequel to the original 2004 hit, continues the saga with more horrific games while maintaining the mystery that made the first film so intriguing. The story follows Detective Eric Matthews (Donnie Wahlberg), a corrupt cop with a shady past, as he confronts Jigsaw. The killer has placed Matthews’ son, Daniel (Erik Knudsen), into one of his games, and it is up to Matthews to determine where Daniel is while Jigsaw delves into his motives for initiating these games. Meanwhile, within the game, Daniel is locked in a house with a group of people. This group includes Amanda (Shawnee Smith), who had escaped death in the previous film. The game begins as the group is infected with an airborne toxin with only two hours to find the vaccines spread throughout the house in elaborate traps. The acting is not particularly good. The characters play generic roles, including the brooding detective and muscle-bound chauvinist. This does not allow the characters to grow, and it is difficult to sympathize with them. It is, however, much better than the acting in the first film. Anything is better than Cary Elwes trying to fake an American accent. Besides the acting, the film is very entertaining. Though it is a sequel, it does not seem necessary for viewers to have seen the first film. It also includes a climax that will surprise even loyal fans. The story does not delve into the psychology of the games as much as the first. Instead, it leans toward the horror aspect. This does not take away from the film, but it may leave fans of the first one a little disinterested. Nonetheless, what little psychological backgroundthe story offers is quite thought provoking. Saw II is a worthy sequel to the original, and thanks to some clever twists, the chance for a third film is almost assured. This movie is not for the faint of heart, but for those who enjoy being shocked. It’s time to play the game.
