Walk aids victims of hurricanes

By Paul Mullin

The Catholic Campus Ministry (CCM) and the Clergy of Lawrence Township (COLT) held a crop walk on Sunday, Oct. 16.

The walk, designed to raise awareness of world hunger as well as money to assist those in need, was part of a worldwide effort to combat poverty and hunger in the areas affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, but also to assist those in need on a wider scale.

“We have allocated some of [the money] for victims of Katrina and Rita, but the majority of it will go to people who don’t have anything to begin with,” said Father Bruno Ugliano, the Catholic chaplain on campus.

The 6.2-mile walk, coordinated by the Church World Service, takes the participants from Rider University past Lawrence Middle School and Lawrence High School, along Glenn Avenue, and down Princeton Pike on the way back to Rider.

“The walk is meant to raise hunger awareness,” said Nancy Schluter, Protestant chaplain on campus. “Some people brought food, although that wasn’t the intention.”

“Up until months ago before the hurricanes we took it all for granted,” said Ugliano. “The walk is designed to raise consciousness of poverty.”
